APPENDIX OVERVIEW <br /> The purpose of this appendix is to provide a reasonable <br /> degree of safety to persons occupying existing <br /> buildings by providing for alterations which do not <br /> conform with the minumum requirements of the uniform <br /> fire code. <br /> EXITS <br /> Basements and all floors above the second story <br /> must have two exits. <br /> VERTICAL SHAFTS <br /> Stairways, elevator hoistways and mechanical <br /> shafts must be fire protected in an approved <br /> manner. <br /> BASEMENTS <br /> Basements exceeding 1500 square feet must have <br /> adequate openings above ground level or must be <br /> sprinklered. <br /> STANDPIPES <br /> Buildings over four stories in height must have a <br /> standpipe system. <br /> SMOKE DETECTORS <br /> Sleeping rooms in dwelling units must have smoke <br /> detectors installed. <br /> SEPARATION OF OCCUPANCIES <br /> Separation between occupancies must be provided in <br /> an approved manner. <br />
