We changed the paint colors as we remodeled and tried to use muted historic colors that
would bring out the detailing in the building.
We are asking that the building be recognized by the City of Everett by placement on the
Everett Register.
Morrie Trautman: I have watched the project from across the street and have admired
the way you have gone through the process and the final result. It really is a beautiful
building. You have done a masterful job of retaining the character and the intent.
Congratulations.
Staff Report
Jan Meston: The criteria for placement on the Everett Register require that the property
must be at least 50 years old; significant to Everett history, architecture, or cultural
history; and retain significant historic character to reflect the history of the community. It
must also fall into at least one of the following categories:
• Associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad
patterns of national, state or local history.
• Embody the distinctive architectural characteristics of a type, period, style or
method of design or construction.
• Be an outstanding work of a designer, builder or architect.
• Exemplify or reflect elements of the city's cultural, social, economic, political,
aesthetic, engineering or architectural history.
• Be associated with the lives of person significant to national, state or local history.
Staff has determined the Challacombe& Fickel Funeral Home meets the criteria for the
Everett Register in the following ways:
• It was built in 1923 as documented by water records and the 1923 Polk's
Directory, so it is 86 years old;
• It is significant to Everett's cultural and architectural history; and
• The exterior of the building is substantially original and in its original location.
The building also falls into three of the additional categories required for the Register. It
is associated with the lives of persons significant to local history,Nicholas B.
Challacombe and Charles H. Fickel. It also embodies the architectural characteristics of
a style of design, the American Foursquare. And it reflects elements of the city's
architectural history through being designed by B.F. Turnbull, one of Everett's most
important architects during the early 1920s.
Staff recommends that Historical Commission recommend approval of listing the
Challacombe&Fickel Funeral Home building on the Everett Register of Historic Places.
Mark French: I will now open the floor to public comment.
3
