i
Public Comment
Jack O'Donnell: Andy said that he and Kaye were lucky to get the building, but in fact,
the building was lucky to get Andy and Kaye. Here was a building designed by an
Everett architect, Benjamin Turnbull, totally unique in a foursquare style but brick.
Unfortunately it languished and sat idle all those years. That worried all of us. What a
perfect way to use this building, to give it a second life. My brother and I had the
privilege of receiving a personal tour from Andy shortly after the Halls took possession,
and we got to see the building before it was rehabilitated. We later toured as part of the
Historic Everett Home Tour. They saved the best of the building on the main floor. The
lamps and glass and woodwork were saved. It's a fabulous job. I know that if I were
sitting on the Commission, I would be voting for designation of the Challacombe&
Fickel building to the Everett Register and also would vote for its eligibility for Special
Valuation. Thank you.
Kaye Hall: Prior to Ruth's dying, Andy had written a letter to Ruth to say how much
we wanted that building, but she passed away before we got the letter to her. We had
looked at this building with admiration for a lot of years before we actually were able to
get it. We feel very fortunate.
Barb Hardman moved to close the public hearing. Morrie seconded the motion, which
passed unanimously.
Mark French: We will now discuss among the Commission. We have a nomination for
the Everett Register.
Barb Hardman: I feel we are lucky that this building fell into the right hands and the
Halls have already demonstrated how much they care and how sensitive they are to the
original structure. With what they have done and with their future plans, I feel very
comfortable with the Everett Register nomination. This is a great example and is what
we are all about.
Paul Van Slyck: It is a great old building that has not been messed around with a lot. It
was relatively easy to make excellent use of this building. We should encourage more of
the buildings in town to go through this transition back to what they once were. It's a
beautiful building.
Sandra Alder: It is really fine what you have done to the building. Great job.
Morrie Trautman: As you know, old buildings are a special interest of mine. And to see
what you have done with this is great. I agree with everyone else, it couldn't have fallen
into better hands.
Mark French: We have had a look at the proposed conference room in the porte-
cochere. Will that need to be reviewed again if the building is placed on the register?
We have seen a rendering of the proposal today.
Andy Hall: I do already have a permit for the project.
4
