w
• Morrie Trautman: We have seen the rendering of what is proposed and we saw the
windows in the basement which will be installed. The design is consistent with the
architecture of the building.
Mark French: I am comfortable including that as part of the decision and would like a
motion to include that. The new conference room will help make the property usable
which helps preserve it.
I'd like to discuss the building style a little, too. It definitely has elements of an
American Foursquare. Also,it was obviously an early mixed use building with a
public/retail face and also the home feel. Mr. Turnbull obviously understood that and
created a very formal face. Some Foursquares had brick if there was money involved,
but the front looks to me like Mr. Turnbull might have started with a Foursquare because
of the economy or the shape, then embellished it with Colonial Revival details. Or it may
have been a Colonial Revival with American Foursquare details. I would like to get a
little more language about these details in the description of the property for the record.
It does represent more than just a American Foursquare, and I think we should honor Mr.
Turnbull's early gesture at trying to blend the styles.
Jan Meston: We can do that before the nomination goes to City Council. We do get
requests for information on register properties, so the more detail the better.
Sandra Alder: I agree with Mark's suggestion. Once it is recorded, it's nice to have
the description correct.
Mark French: I applaud the work that the Halls have done. The property did fall into
the right hands, which doesn't happen very often.
Barb Hardman: This is a great example of how you can rehabilitate a building and get
it on the register but still find successful adaptive reuse.
Mark French: Adaptive reuse is what we need to educate the public and property owners
on. We can save a lot of our history with that process.
Barb Hardman moved to recommend placing the Challacombe & Fickel Funeral
Home building on the Everett Register, to approve the proposed design for a
conference room in the porte-cochere, and to recommend an expanded description of
the building's architecture be added to the nomination form. Morrie Trautman
seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Special Valuation for Challacombe& Fickle Building
Mark French: Next we will consider the application for Special Valuation for the
Challacombe& Fickle Building.
Jan Meston: Your recommendation on placement on the Everett Register goes to City
Council for final decision, but the Historical Commission makes the final decision on
Special Valuation
5
