Staff Report Nomination of Challacombe & Fickle Funeral Home For Listing in the Everett Register of Historic Places Process of Nomination for Everett Register The application process requires the applicant to research the history of the property and submit an Everett Register application to the Historical Commission for review. Owner approval is required for listing in the Everett Register. If the Historical Commission approves the application,the Commission then forwards their recommendation to City Council for final decision. Listing in the Everett Register is primarily meant to encourage preservation of our heritage and to honor those who have cared for Everett's old buildings. It obligates the owner to consult with the Historical Commission before commencing major work on the property, although the consultation is advisory only. Prior to demolition of a register property, an owner must request waiver from the Historical Commission. The Historical Commission forwards a recommendation for approval or denial of a demolition request to City Council for final decision. Criteria for Listing in the Everett Register The property must be at least 50 years old; significant to Everett history, architecture, or cultural history; and retain significant historic character to reflect the history of the community. It must also fall into at least one of the following categories: • Associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of national, state or local history. • Embody the distinctive architectural characteristics of a type,period, style or method of design or construction. • Be an outstanding work of a designer,builder or architect. • Exemplify or reflect elements of the city's cultural, social, economic,political, aesthetic, engineering or architectural history. • Be associated with the lives of person significant to national, state or local history.
