Athletic Fields
During the programming phase of this master plan, athletic
fields emerged as one of the key uses to be accommodated in
the park. The community advocated for a balance between the
athletic fields and neighborhood uses. The city, advisory com-
mittee, and the community voiced a strong preference for con-
solidating the scheduled athletic fields in the eastern part of
the site similar to the use pattern that exists now. The fields
are sized to accommodate collegiate play. The fields would
also be available for community use when games are not
scheduled. Selection of synthetic turf surfacing allows for over-
lap of the various types of athletic fields such as baseball and
soccer, resulting in more efficient use of park space. The
lighted turf area accommodates two baseball/softball fields
with 300 foot outfields and two 225 x 360 foot soccer fields
with required buffer areas around and between the fields and
no overlap between any two games. Athletic field markings are
subject to further review during the subsequent design phase
to allow for flexibility in response to potential changes in
neighborhood needs for other sports. A warm-up area is avail-
