Community gardens and rain garden
mation about subjects such as organic/sustainable gardening
methods, planting for wildlife, herb gardens and native plant
gardens. The rain garden located near the northwest entry
plaza could also accommodate interpretive features and sign-
age.
Open Space
A variety of open spaces are located on the west and east
sides of the site. A relatively flat rectangular lawn area,
approximately 140 x 200 feet, is available for unprogrammed
active play such as neighborhood pick-up games. A large
open lawn area with a gentle slope located to the southeast of
the picnic shelters is available for unstructured passive
recreational activities such as Frisbee, croquet, badminton,
picnicking, and relaxing. Small, informal performances could
occur here as well. To the northeast of the picnic shelters a
steeper lawn area could be used for similar activities such as
sledding when it snows.
The area to the southeast of Summit Avenue remains an
unstructured open space as it is now. An accessible pathway
is added from the intersection of Summit Avenue and
Cleveland Avenue to the Summit Ave/E. Marine View Drive
intersection. Most of the existing trees in this open space are
preserved, including a small woodland area.
