Katrina Lindahl added that she was glad to see free space that is planted and
that fields will be open to all; would like to preserve trees as feasible and provide
diversity in tree species; lighting should not impact surrounding neighbors;
distance markers will be appreciated on pathways.
Casey Rice asked about analysis regarding trails. John and Paul referenced park
size and lighting and the improvements to property values. Mark Harrison added
that a well-designed park which includes neighborhood design involvement
allows for success for the park—deterring vandalism.
Public comments closed at 7pm. Erich applauded staff and citizens for all efforts.
Appreciated response from Mark Harrison when questioning various fees
attached to phase one and two. Erich encourages savings whenever possible.
Paul added that at this level a 20% contingency is appropriate. This percentage
will be reduced as the project moves into the design phase.
Tina complimented the public process and appreciated the consideration of
public comments.
Mary Jane—amazing to watch the process and feels the end result is very
intuitive.
Art thanked McLeod Rekord, parks staff and commissioners. Noting appreciation
for the park tour and specific outreach to non-English speaking residents, Art is
appreciative and looking forward to the design and the efforts. Tina added that
grant funding should be easier to get due to public involvement.
Tina motioned to accept this plan and submit to council; seconded by Mary Jane.
All approved.
Gender Equity Annual Report—using a PowerPoint presentation, Cory
Rettenmier presented the 2010 annual report. Art complimented the SWOT
approach to this; Erich complimented Cory as well, although he feels a 50/50
split between male/female participation is not necessarily a desired result. Tina
asked how these opportunities for females have been advertised. Cory
referenced advertising and photos in the quarterly guide. Tina suggested
additional means to provide interest to women such as banners and the website.
Mary Jane asked if established teams such as the Aqua Sox and Seattle Storm
have been considered as partners to help involve females. Lori Cummings stated
that the athletics team of the department is focusing on efforts to include females
in all offerings. Paul added that our gender equity policy is by far the best in the
state.
Projects/Programs Updates—Paul highlighted activity related to fields at Kasch
Park stating that council approval has been received to start development of
construction documents with the intent to replace up to three synthetic soccer
fields during the course of the next several years.
