In addition, exit passageways shall be constructed (wall, floors and ceilings) with
not less than a 1-hour fire-resistance rating. The tunnel itself is a concrete structure with roughly 6" minimum concrete
walls. The concrete itself provides a minimum of a 1 hour rated assembly.
As part of this scope of work, BRPH provided a new a steel frame system to the interior of the tunnel. This new steel
framing provides support for new tools/parts being transported on the factory floor above the tunnel. It is of the
understanding that the parts movement only occurs once every three days. Additionally this movement only occurs on
third shift when occupancy in the factory is low.
It should be noted that the steel framing is confined to the interior of the rated exit passageway (i.e. tunnel) and does
not penetrate the walls of the tunnel in anyway. By being confined within the rated enclosure, the steel maintains the
same fire rated protection that the exit passageway provides.
Finally, the shoring steel is not needed to maintain the structural integrity of the tunnel during normal load conditions or
emergency egress of the factory and does not require to have additional fire rating.
I hope this helps you in your response back to the City. Please let us know if we can provide additional assistance.
Regards,
Ken _ -
11
