SECTION 02203 - IMPORTED STRUCTURAL FILL (BORROW)
PART 1 - GENERAL
1 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General Supplementary Conditions
and Division-1 Specification sections, apply to work of this section. Other related sections:
B. Section 02021- General Site Preparation and Grading.
Section 02223- Earthwork.
Section 02233- Watering.
' 1.02 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. The work of this section consists of furnishing, loading, hauling, and placing of structural fill
for use as site grading fill, to replace any unsuitable soils, as backfill around foundations, in
utility trenches, and below footings and slabs. Structural fill is defined as all fill which will
ultimately be subjected to structural loading, such as those imposed by footings, floor slabs,
walkways, curb and gutter, all paved surfaces, or the work of other sections as shown and
specified..
1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Reference, Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as published by Bureau of
Reclamation in the Earth Manual.
B. See Section 02021.
1.04 JOB CONDITIONS
A. All usable excess material excavated under the work of other sections shall be utilized in the
formation of embankments and other roadways. Wasting of materials will not be allowed.
PART 2 - MATERIALS
' Imported structural fill shall be road base with no more than 7% passing a#200 sieve.
2.01 BORROW
A. Selected to meet the requirements and conditions of the particular fill for which its use is
intended. Imported structural fill shall consist of granular material capable of being readily
shaped and compacted to the required densities. Free of roots, trash, and other deleterious
material.
B. Imported structural fill shall consist of material obtained from sources provided by the
Contractor and shall consist of a well graded,4-inch-minus, granular material with less than
15% passing the#200 sieve and free of topsoil, roots, debris and other deleterious material.
C. Structural fill used as sub-base material in pavement areas should consist of a well graded,
4-inch-minus, granular material free of topsoil, roots, debris, and other deleterious material.
The imported fill passing the#200 sieve shall be limited to not more than 13%of that portion
' which passes the 2-inch sieve. The minus#200 sieve material should have a plastic index
(PI)value of 6 or lower.
D. Untreated base course(road base): See section 02606. A sample of the road base material
shall be submitted for approval at least 10 working days prior to placement.
E. Porous material: For use under concrete work floor slabs where moisture sensitive floor
coverings are planned, to provide a cut off barrier for upward capillary flow of pore water.
Unless otherwise noted, it shall consist of well sorted granular material such as pea gravel or
3/4-inch to 1-inch-minus gap-graded gravel placed upon properly prepared subgrades. The
material should have less than 10%passing the#4 sieve and less than 2%passing the#200
sieve unless otherwise approved. Provide 4" minimum material thickness unless otherwise
' noted on drawings. Untreated base course may be used in lieu of porous rock when
approved by engineer.
SPORTSMAN'S WAREHOUSE
