Retaining Wall Interim Option Construction Summary Page 2 March 26,2017
4841 Glenwood Avenue,Everett Washington RGI Project No.2016-072
The soils excavated were stockpiled on plastic and covered with plastic as recommended. The
exposed soil was compacted to seal the surface the chips and straw was placed on the exposed
soil for erosion control.
Remaining Block Wall
This interim solution does not improve the overall stability of the remaining wall to current
design standards due to the lack of batter, poor drainage and inadequate compaction of the
backfill soil. The existing wall currently is either leaning towards the soils retained (northern end
of the wall) near vertical or leaning slightly away from the soils retained (south end).
The southern end of the wall was measured with a tape and plumb bob and the wall currently
slopes away from the retained soils at 1.5 percent in the northern two thirds to 2.5 percent in the
southern third of the remaining block wall where only the top block was removed. This tilt
appears to be consistent over the full wall height and removing another block from the wall will
not change the overall tilt of the wall. This type of wall is constructed at a one in ten batter or 5.7
degree tilt and the wall is typically stable without backfill.
Although the wall is tilting slightly away from the retained soils, the likelihood of the block
tumbling off the wall is relatively small. The wall still need to be completely replaced with a new
wall designed and constructed in accordance with current design standards.
Limitations
This letter is the property of RGI, Caliber Real Estate Services LLC, and its designated agents.
Within the limits of the scope and budget, this letter was prepared in accordance with generally
accepted geotechnical engineering practices in the area at the time this letter was issued.
