Auguet 1 , 1989
Project No. 8906-26G
II. DEBIGN RECOlII7END11TION8
5_0 INTRODUCTION
Baeed on our exploratione, it appeara that the eubject property ie
auitable , from a geotechnical etandpoint , for the proposed
development , provided the recommendations contained herein are
followed. Bearing etrata, conaietinq of the Vaehon lodgeeent till
and ablation drift (Unita 2 and 3) were encountered at deptha
ranging from 1 to 8 feet below existinq ground aurface. Generally ,
the bearing atratum wae encountered at relatively ehallow depthe
around the perimeter of the aite and deepened towarda the central
portion of the parcel. 3ee Figure 1 , 91te and Exploration Plan for
depth to bearing in each of the exploration pito. Where the bearinq
atratum ia ahallow, a typical epread footing foundation syetem may
be uaed. Where the bearinq atratum ia deeper, a deepened foundation
syetem will be neceseary to tranemit the foundation loada through
the onaite fill material and into the underlying medi.um denae to
denae, natural aedimenta. This deepened foundation eyatem may
include the uae of extended footinge, concrete trenchea, rock
trenchea, or drilled piere. Dependinq on encountered conditione at
each building eite, it may be necessary to combine ehallow and deep
foundation syeteme.
6_0 9ITE PREPARATION
Old foundatione presently on the aite which are under building areae
or not part of future plana ehould be removed. Any buried utilities
ehould be also removed or relocated if they are under building
areas . The reaulting depreesiona ehould be backfilled with
atructural fill ae diacuased under 3ection 7.0, 3tructural Fill .
Site preparation of planned building and roadway areas should
include removal of all treee , brueh , debria and any other
deleterioua material . Additionally, the upper orqanic topeoil
ehould be removed and the remaining roota grubbed. Where ahallow
apread footinge will be used, all fill and looee material ehould be
etripped down to the underlying in-place medium denae or dense
sedimenta . If , during etripping , areae of soft aubgrade are
encountered, theae areas ahould be overexcavated and backfilled with
etructural fill.
The natural sediments encountered under the topaoil and/or fill
materials are generally firm and well-suited to the propoeed
conetruction. However, both the natural eedimente and the onaite
fill material contain a high percentage of fine-grained material
which makes them moiature-aenaitive and eubject to dieturbance when
wet. The contractor muet use care during eite preparation and
6
