Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS had over-excavated the Lot 224 area down 2.5 to
4 feet down to material which could generally be probed less than 4 inches. GeoDesign noted that DDS had
over-excavated approximately 5 feet of material in the southeast corner; penetration depths in this area were 3 feet.
GeoDesign recommended further investigation as to why the exposed material significantly differs from other material
encountered on the site. GeoDesign notified Craig with DDS and John Feltner with Polygon of our observations.
Lot 225:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that the foundation subgrade area (appeared to poorly compacted fill material to loosely
placed surcharge material)for Lot 225 could be probed 1.5 to 3 feet using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe and recommended
that the material be removed down to firm an unyielding material. Today, GeoDesign noted that DDS had over-excavated
the Lot 225 area down 1.5 to 3 feet down to material which could generally be probed less than 4 inches. GeoDesign
recommended that the over-excavated area be lined with a non-woven geotextile material and backfilled with structural fill
material.
Craig with DDS stated that the over-excavated areas would be backfilled with a crushed rock or recycled concrete material
later this week. GeoDesign notified the contractor that the over-excavated areas were currently suitable to place backfill
material.
Lot 226:
Previously, GeoDesign noted that DDS over-excavated sections of Lot 226 down to material which had been compacted to
greater than 95% of its maximum dry density as determine.d by a Modified Proctor analysis. Today, GeoDesign noted that
DDS had backfilled the over-excavated areas with a 2-inch clean crushed railroad ballast material which had been
compacted using the bucket of an excavator.
It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the foundation subgrade area observed today is currently suitable for support of the
intended structure. GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated material be removed from the base of
the footing areas prior to the placement of concrete.
This report presents opinlons formed as a result of our observation of aaivities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on[he contraaor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the projett irrespeRive of the presence of our representative.
