Today, GeoDesign observed a test pit within southeast corner of the lot area to assess the differing
subsurface conditions.
GeoDesign noted that large boulders and chunks of concrete mixed with a very moist gray silty SAND with gravel was
encountered from approximately 7 to 16 feet below the bottom of footing. The boulders/concrete appeared to have been
encapsulated with the surrounding soil and had been subject to an approximately 10 feet surcharge during the pre -loading
of Phase 2. At approximately 16 feet below bottom of footing, GeoDesign observed what appeared to be a native gray
sandy SILT/gray silty SAND. GeoDesign noted that the test pit excavation was backfilled with the excavated
boulders/concrete and silty SAND in a manner which reduced void space between the large boulders/concrete, The
material was placed in approximately 1-2 feet lifts which were tamped into place using the bucket of an excavator.
GeoDesign recommended that the loose soil in the southeast corner be stabilized by over -excavating the area an additional
3 feet and backfilling the area with at least 1.5 feet of quarry spalls tamped into the underlying soil. GeoDesign
recommended that the quarry spalls be covered with a non -woven geotextile material. The remaining over -excavated area
should be backfilled to bottom of footing elevation with a crushed rock material placed in lifts and compacted into a firm and
unyielding mass.
At the base of the over -excavated area on the west and north side of the lot area, relative compaction of the exposed soil
was tested using a Tmxler Moisture -Density gauge; in -place density tests indicated that the material had been compacted
to greater than 95% of its maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor analysis.
Craig with DDS stated that the over -excavated area in the southeast comer would be backfilled with quarry spalls starting
tomorrow morning.
This report prtlsant3 opinlons formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services.
