Today,GeoDesign noted that DDS had over-excavated the west <br /> 1/3 of the building area was over-excavated approximately 5 feet down to material which could be probed less than 2 <br /> inches. GeoDesign also noted that the east 1/4 of the lot area exhibited pumping under the bucket of the excavator and <br /> could be probed up to 2 feet. GeoDesign recommended that the material be removed down to firm and unyielding ground. <br /> For the west portion,the material over-excavated consisted of a gray silty SAND with gravel which was approximately 10% <br /> over its optimum moisture content. For the eastern portion,the material excavated consisted of a mixture of a very moist <br /> brown silty SAND and a mixture of brown sandy SILT with organics(grass). GeoDesign observed DDS over-excavate the <br /> area up to 3 feet down to firm and unyielding material which could be probed less than 2 inches. GeoDesign notified the <br /> contractor that the over-excavated area were suitable for placement of backfill material.GeoDesign noted that DDS <br /> backfilled the over-excavated areas with a 2-inch clean crushed railroad ballast material which was tamped into a firm and <br /> unyielding mass using the bucket of an excavator and compacted using a smooth drum vibratory roller. <br /> It is the opinion of GeoDesign that the foundation area for Lot 267 is suitable for support of the intended structure. <br /> LO1rS168-274: <br /> Today,GeoDesign note that DDS had excavated the foundation and crawl space area for Lot 268. The exposed <br /> foundation subgrade soils generally consisted of a gray-brown silty SAND with gravel which could be generally probed <br /> generlally less than 1 inch using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe.While driving the pin to take an in-place density test along <br /> the north perimeter of the lot area,GeoDesign noted a significant drop in pin resistance at approximately 12 inches below <br /> ground surface;penetration depths into the driven hole using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe were 2 feet. GeoDesign had <br /> Craig with DDS excavate a test hole to evaluate the underlying fill material. Material encountered consisted of a very soft to <br /> soft brown sandy SILT with organics(grass/hay)which could be probed 3 feet using a soil probe;the soft material extended <br /> to depths up to 6 feet below plan bottom of footing. <br /> GeoDesign notified the client and contractor that the soft brown sandy SILT with organics encountered was not suitable for <br /> support of the intended structure and recommended that the material be removed and replaced with structural fill. <br /> GeoDesign noted that the material encountered appeared to be associated with a previously existing berm shown on the <br /> existing grade contours which was present from elevations ranging from 20 to 26 feet; pad subgrade for Lots 268-274 are at <br /> elevations ranging from 266 to 268 feet.Test excavations within Lot 270 exposed the same unsuitable material at <br /> approximately 3 feet BGS. <br /> A summary of our observations can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Photo Log. <br /> This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services.We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and <br /> specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative.Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor,the contractor's employees <br /> or agents.Our firm is not responsible for site safety.This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations,testing,and preliminary recommendations.The report can only be considered <br /> final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the'Reviewed By"section. <br /> ,1N{ <br /> 10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 1206.838.9900 <br /> 2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095 <br />
