Today, GeoDesign noted that BDZ had backfilled the over-excavated area with a cement-treated gray-brow silty
SAND (f-m)with gravel (f-c)which was previously above its optimum moisture content. GeoDesign noted that the cement
dust was added to stockpiles of material outside the foundation area and thoroughly mixed using the bucket of an
excavator. GeoDesign noted that the material was mixed, placed, and spread using a Komatsu PC300 excavator and
compacted into a firm and unyielding mass using a Hamm 3410 smooth-drum vibratory roller. Penetration depths
encountered shortly after compaction were less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. It is the opinion of
GeoDesign that the foundation subgrade area observed today is currently suitable for support of the intended structure.
GeoDesign recommends that any surficially loose and saturated material be removed from the base of the foundation area
prior to the placement of concrete.
LOT 256:
Today, GeoDesign noted that BDZ had completed excavation of the footing and crawl space area for Lot 256 using a
Komatsu PC300 excavator. GeoDesign noted that the exposed foundation subgrade consisted of a gray to gray-brown silty
SAND with gravel and concrete/asphalt. Penetration depths encountered across the west side of the lot area was generally
less than 1 inch. GeoDesign noted that that the east side of the lot area required approximately 2.0 to 2.5 feet of
over-excavation to expose firm and unyielding ground which could be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter
soil probe.
GeoDesign notified the client and contractor that the excavation was currently suitable for placement of structural backfill.
material.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed BV'section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
