SERS equipment processes
7 million radio transmissions annually, averaging 19,000 daily transmissions with 95%coverage of the
county's 940 square miles.
SERS' existing 20-year-old 800 MHz analogue radio system is outdated and becoming increasingly difficult
to maintain. The system will reach end-of-life in 2020,when its manufacturer(Motorola)will no longer
support it. The manufacturer will no longer make replacement parts.A national consulting firm conducted a
two-year evaluation of the SERS radio system, and recommended replacing the existing analogue system as
soon as possible with a new P25 digital system.A countywide preliminary cost estimate is between$70
million and$75 million.
1
