1
November 19, 2007
G-PN 1 A-WRL-07-114
Page 3
Given the above, we respectfully request that the City of Everett allow Boeing to
use the 2003 International Existing Building Code (IEBC) for the structural
design portions of the subject building alterations. Chapter 3 of the IEBC
classifies the replacement of the crane equipment as a Level 1 alteration.
Section 507.1, Replacement of roofing or equipment, requires that where
replacement of roofing or equipment results in additional dead loads, structural
BOE/NG components (existing and new) supporting such re-roofing or equipment shall
comply with the vertical load requirements of the IBC. CP&A will make a
complete vertical load analysis of the building structure for the increased crane
equipment weight and load rating in accordance with the vertical load
requirements of the IBC. CP&A will then check existing elements and design
new elements as needed so that the altered structure is in compliance with the
vertical load requirements of the IBC. The IEBC has no requirement to "prove"
that the lateral force resisting system is not significantly affected for this level of
alteration. It is our opinion that the IEBC is a better "fit" for this type of
alteration, and will maintain the safety of the building in accordance with the
intent of the IBC.
We appreciate your consideration of this request, and we look forward to your
earliest response. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this further,
please call me at any time.
Sincerely,
Warren R. Lance
Manager
Everett Site Services
Electrical Engineering
425-238-4864
33
