r
PSDS GENERATED*******
D38100 Facilities Mechanical Standards D38106-501
501 PIPE LABELING STANDARDS
501.1 GENERAL
This standard designates the color coding and labeling standards for common types of
utility piping on or in Company areas to facilitate immediate identification of contents. No
attempt will be made to cover herein more exotic or unusual piping contents.
It is recognized that in the past there has not been a consistent pipe labeling standard at
all Boeing facilities. This standard shall apply to all new work and remodels. It is the goal
of the Mechanical Standards Committee to have all facilities eventually comply with this
standard.
Color coding for piping follows ASME A13.1-1996, Scheme for Identification of Piping
Systems. The ASME standard allows alternate labeling schemes if such schemes are
described in writing and implemented so that the using facility can demonstrate that the
basic concerns in the ASME standard are being met.
Since names of piped fluids are too numerous for specific identification by color alone,
color fields will be used only in classifying pipe contents as safe, hazardous or otherwise,
and specific contents shall be spelled out. Where materials are encountered which are
not covered by this document, the ASME standard shall be followed.
CAUTION This section may not include all appropriate regulations that may apply to the
design and development of company facilities. The facility designer must be
completely familiar with all codes and standards enforced by the local
authority having jurisdiction in order to ensure the proper correlation of phases
of facility design.
NOTE: Master Guide Specifications referred to in this document are available to all
Boeing Facilities Sites from Boeing Facilities Design Standards homepage web
site: http://bpsweb.ds.boeing.com/facilities/home.htm
501.2 REFERENCES AND STANDARDS
' A.
