Color fields
are used in combination with legends.
Legend FL 1 Primary and explicit lettering for identification of piping contents.
Pipe Label FL 1 Identification scheme for piping consisting of a legend, color
field, and arrows indicating direction of flow for piping contents.
Piping Systems Pipes of any kind and, in addition, fittings, valves, and pipe
coverings.
FL 1 See FIGURE 1 for detail.
501.4 LABELING
501.4.1 General Areas(Factory,Warehouse,Office and Outside Areas)
All exposed piping, both exterior and interior, shall be identified for contents by distinctive
markings as per this standard. Such markings shall consist of stencil—painted and
lettered color fields, commercially—printed exterior—rated adhesive color legend bands, or
commercially available snap—on type plastic color legend bands. Corrosive environments
will require use of materials compatible with the atmosphere.
All color fields and legends shall be as listed in the Application portion of this standard.
Refer to ANSI Z535.1 for color standards.
Legends shall be placed in the most readable location. Maximum spacing between
labels shall not exceed 50 feet in high bay areas and 25 feet in all other areas on straight
runs of pipe. Labels shall be applied at all changes in direction of pipe, immediately
adjacent to all valves, at points where piping emerges from walls or floors, and at points
of connection to equipment. In addition, stencil—painted or printed-tape arrows to
indicate direction of flow shall be applied adjacent to legends. Where flow can come from
two directions, as in a loop system, or where reversal of flow occurs in a pipe, the arrows
should indicate flow in both directions.
Where pipe size is too small to stencil a readable legend or affix a printed band, apply
identification, with colors and legends as specified in this document,to a sheet metal tab
permanently attached to the pipe or tubing in a conveniently readable location.
Where piping conveying hazardous gases, high pressure air or other dangerous
materials is concealed in serving outlets, as in a laboratory utility panel, test bench, etc.,
the outlet must be defined with the name of the material and the maximum pressure in
1/2 inch letters stamped or engraved on fixed plastic or metal plates with colors and
legends as specified in this document.
REV D 13—MAY-1999 BOE//VC Page 501-3
