(CBC), China (CCTV), Japan (TV Asahi) and in Europe via the European Broadcasting
Union (EBU).
U.S. Figure Skating last awarded Skate America to Everett in 2008 with that event setting
an all-time attendance record for the event that still stands and accounted for an
estimated $3 million in direct economic impact. The event also generated an estimated
additional $20 million in national and international media impressions combined.
To support such an important event, U.S. Figure Skating is requesting a $50,000 grant to
support a nine-month marketing plan that will run from February-October 2018. This grant,
if approved, will allow the event to market over a longer window of time to maximize the
message and attract those fans out side of the 50-mile radius. An event of this nature is
great opportunity to bring in new visitors/fans to the City of Everett from the U.S. as well
as the figure skating powers Canada and Japan whose athletes will participate.
Based on past years, we expect crowds to average between 3,000-8,000 sold tickets per
session with 5 tickets sessions (Friday, Saturday x 2 and Sunday x 2) planned over three
days of competition.
Now 10 years later since the success of 2008 Skate America, we all must work even
harder and dedicate more resources to attract fans in today's crowded marketplace and
24/7 social media world, This is an important event that if given the right resources and
timeline will again be an overwhelming success for the City of Everett both locally and
globally.
PROJECT SCOPE OF WORK
Fully.describe the project, Expand,your summary paragraph from page one to address such issues as:what.it is you wish to do;
who will benefitand why and how;beginning and ending dates of your project; and what measures you will apply to evaluate, its''
success If you are requesting;funds.for a 'specific portion of a larger project, please so state butfocus your response on the
element far which you are requesting funding assistance, This section requires that you to establish,in a clear and quapufiubie
way that your project will sustainor enhance one or more aspects (to be identified by you) of tourism In:the City of Everetf.
Proposals from':projects'that can.;prove.they will generate overnight stays are:preferred.'.Please coordinate your project s-
milestones with;the time line ori page 7 of this package. Please also show any other funding received or requested for your.project.
If approved, the $50,000 grant will be matched by U.S. Figure Skating in cash and in kind
to support an overall nine-month marketing plan to advertise and promote 2018 Skate
America in Everett, Wash., Oct. 18-21, 2018.
Marketing will focus on traditional ad buys utilizing television, radio, print, and billboards
as well as an aggressive social media campaign utilizing all platforms available via U.S.
Figure Skating (twitter, facebook, lnstagram, past event ticket lists etc..), Angels of the
Wind Arena (twitter, facebook, past, email lists from past events) as well as community
partners. We would also work with Skate Canada to focus on the BC region and Japan
Skating Federation as they have proved to be a travel group for figure skating events in
the past.
This event is returning to Everett for the first time since 2008 when it set and all-time event
attendance record. Our goal is to build on that experience and make it even better in
2018. To do that we must position Everett as a place people will want to come to and
make plans to attend. As such advance planning is key to making people buy tickets, plan
flight and book hotels. A nine-month plan will be employed to start this immediately and
build a grassroots plan to attract, engage and communicate with these fans. Additionally,
the entire state of Washington must be engaged and will target key markets like Seattle
and Spokane as known areas of figure skating fans with previous event experience in
each market.
4
