The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross connection regulations require .vatzr
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinking water by taking pecautions to ensure lhat fire
protection water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems does not backFlow into the public
system. In the past, single check valves were considered as an adequate backFlow device for commercial
properties. However, DOH has determinzd that double check detector assemblies (DCD,4) are the
minimum acceptable backflow protectian device for commercial fire rotection systems. Some
commercial buildings in Everett still have single check-valves installed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire services when new construction is planned that will affect fire services. This
additional protection is necessary to adhere to DOH regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincereiy,
 w1-
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Venturo, Utilities Records Manager
Verl Sly, Meg Haley
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 •(425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8882
