(
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Taco Bell Corporation
April 29, 1993
(
E-6140
Page 4
The geotechnical factor that will have the most impact on the project is the potential for
differential settlement across the restaurant buiiding area. Base on the subsurface information
obtainad during our site study and our discussion with the present property owner, it appears
that as much as fourteen feet of urcontrolled backfill was placed at the proposed restaurant
building Iocation.
Therefore, in order to preclude excessive differential settlements from occurring, the following
options are recommended for your consideration:
• Relocate the proposed building to an area on the property where the entire buifding will be
supported on competent native soil or structural fill outside of the zone of uncontrolled fiil
or,
• After removal of the soil stockpiled across the site, overexcavate the loose saturated soil
from the zone of uncontrolled fill, (area whiere underground storage, tanks were removed
and backfid), dewater the excavation, if required, then backfill the excavation with a
ciean tructural fill as described in tha Site Preparation and Grading section of this report.
This will require an overexcavation of at least four feet below the bottom of tha foundation
footings at the proposed building areo.
This report has been prepared for spEcific applicatian to this project only and in a manner
consistent with that level of care and skill ordinarily er,ercisad by other members of the
profession currently practicing under similar conditions in this araa for the exclusive use of
Taco Bell Corparation and their representatives. No warranty is expressed or implied. It is
recommended that this report, in its entirety, be included n the project contract documents
for the information of the contractor.
:: . . :
The site should be stripped and cleared of all foundations, concrete slabs, pavements, utility
lines, soil stockpiles (approximately three to four feet across western twa-thirds section ofi
property) all organic matter and any other deleterious material. Stripped material should not
be mixed with any soils to be used as structural fill. It is critical that all subgrade soils
disturbed during initia! clearing work be removod if unsuitabte for compaction.
Following the stripping and ciearing procedures, (including removal of the loose saturated soil
stockpiles across the western two-thirds section of the site), the foundation footing areas
should be overexcavated to at least four feet helow footing bottoms, to four feet beyond
footing perimeters. This will result in an overexcavation of five and one-half feet below final
grades.
Earth Consultants, Inc.
