(
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Taco Bell Corporation
April 29, 1993
i
E-6140
Page 7
For frictional capacity between the base of footings and/or fioor siabs and the underlying soil
a coefficient of .40 can be used. Friction and lateral pressure may be combined; however,
the Iateral bearing resisiance used must not exceed two-thirds of the combined amount.
These values include a factor of safety of 1.5.
. . :: ..
Slab-on-grade floors may be supported on competent native soil subgrade or on structural fill,
depending on final grades and the location of the proposed structures. Any disturbed native
soiis must either be recompacted or replaced with structural fill. The siab should be provided
with a minimum of four inches of freA-draining sand or gravel. In areas where sab moisture
is undesirable, a vapor barrier such as a 6-mil plastic membrane should be placed beneath the
slab. Two inches of damp sand shouid be placed over the membrane for protection during
construction and to aid in curing of the concrete.
: : . ,
In no case should the excavation slopes be greater than the limits specified in local, sta2e and
federal safety regulations. According to the naw OSHA regulations, the existing medium
dense to dense silty sand fill (SM) and dense native sand (SP) and silt with sand (ML) wouid
be classified as type "B" soils. Therefore, temporary cuts greater than four feet in height,
should be sloped at an inclination no steeper than 1 H:1 V for type "B" soils. If slopes of this
inclination, or flatter, cannot be constructed, or if excavations greater than ten feet in deptli
are required, temporary shoring may be necessary. This shoring would help protect against
slope cr excavation collapse, and would provide protection to workmen in the excavation.
If temporary shoring is required, we will be available to provide shoring design criteria, if
requsted.
The above information has been, provided solely as a service to our client. Under no
circumstances shouid the above information be interpreted to mean that this office is
assuming responsibility for construcYion site safety ar the contractor's act(vities; such
responsibility is not being implied and should not be inferred.
Site Drainaqg
It is not likely that groundwater levels will present any construction related problems while
excavating the foundation footings. However, if seepage is encountered in the utility or
foundation excavations during constructian, the bottom of the excavation should be sloped
to one or more shallow sump pits. The collected water can then be pumped from these pits
to a positive and permanent discharge, such as a nearby storrn drain. Depending on the
Earth Consultants, Inc.
