C
GEOTECHN!CAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Taco Bell Corporation
April 29, 1993
. .: .
t
E-6140
Page 6
Based on the encountered subsurface soil conditions, preliminary building design criteria, and
assuming compliance with the preceding "Site Preparation and Grading" section, the proposed
restaurant building and trash enciosure may be supported on conventional shallow spread
footings bearing on newly placed structural fill or competent native soiis depending on finai
site grades and the locations of the proposed structures.
Individual spread footings or continuous walls fiootings providing support for the proposed
Iocation of the restaurant building and trash enciosure may be designed for a maximum
ailowable soil bearing value of one thousand five hundred (1500) psf. This ailowable soil
bearing value is contingent on the overexcavation and replacement procedure described in the
previous sections of this report. If the building is relocated outside of the previous
underground storage tank backfill zone, then the maximum allowable soil bearing capacity can
be increased to two thousand five hundred (2500) psf. Foundation footings should be at least
twelve (12) inches in width and should extend to a depth of at least eighteen (18) inches
below the lowest adjacent finished subgrade or interior floor slab surface.
It is understood that isolated pier footings employed for the Taco Bell identity sign support is
usually on the order of about tive to ten fieet in depth due to lateral load and/or uplift design
requirements. This deeper footing may be designed for an increased allowable bearing value
of three thousand (3000) psf.
These basic allowable bearing values are for dead plus live loads and may be increased one-
third for combined dead, live, wind, and seismic forces. It is estimated that total and
differential footing settlements for the relatively light building, trash enclosure and identity
sign structures will be approximately one-half and ono-quarter inches, respectively. It is
recommended that all footing excavations be observed by a representative of ECI, prior to
placing forms or rebar, to verify that exposed soil conditions are as anticipated in this report,
and/or provide suitable modifications in the design, as required.
.- :► :
An allowable passive resistznce against the sides of footings, grade beams or other
subsurface foundation elements of two hundred and fifty (250) psf per foot of depth may be
used pravided there is positive contact between the vertical bearing surface and the adjacent
compacted fill or undisturbed competent native soils.
Earth Consultants. inc.
