The maximum allowable depth in vegetated swales is 6 inches
for emergent ;wales.
The following information Is required for City revieG and
approval of vegetated swales:
1) design flow calculation
2) velocity and flow depth calculations
3) bypass sizing calculations
4) copy of site plan showing the contributing area
5) calculation of the hydraulic residence time in the
swale
PLAN REV=EN COMMENTS
Vegetate3 awales:
The following requirements and drawings from the Citys
Design and Construction Standards an3 Specifications should
be included on both the drainage plans and on any landscape
plans For the area:
 1) The City's vegetated swale construction
requirements from section 4-12.4(2).
Z 4)
The vegetated swale planting requirements,
including the vegetated swale seed and wetland
plant lists from section 4-12.3.
The swale cross sections and plan view shown in
City standard drawing #419.
The vegetated swale maintenance requirements from
section 4-12.5 of the City's standards.
Vegetated swales are to be designed with a minimum freeboard
•' of 0.5 feet above the maimum design depth.
City standards require the entire associated side slope of
J the swale, from the bottom of the swale to the top of the
adjacent bank, to have a maximum slope of 3:1 unless
rockeries or retaining walls are used.
The retaining walls constructed in association with the
swale may not provide the required 0.5 feet of freeboard.
Therefore, the location where the 3:1 side slope of the
L swale meets the retaining wall must be 1.5 horizontal fee'.:
from the maximum design water level in the swale.
The maximum design depth of flow in the swale should be
shown on the swale cross-sectional detail.
 I ` `Landscaping may
,i the swale.
ccl ° ^ r, `{-t
1„hcc!U! L, lky bM
i.1"U ('
I ,
not be provided within the freeboard area of ✓
