I <br /> 1 <br /> 2 5-04.3(14) Planing (Milling) Bituminous Pavement <br /> 3 The planning plan must be approved by the Engineer and a pre planning meeting must <br /> 4 be held prior to the start of any planing. See Section 5-04.3(14)B2 for information on <br /> 5 planning submittals. <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Locations of existing surfacing to be planed are as shown in the Drawings. <br /> 8 I 9 Where planing an existing pavement is specified in the Contract, the Contractor must <br /> 10 remove existing surfacing material and to reshape the surface to remove irregularities. <br /> 11 The finished product must be a prepared surface acceptable for receiving an HMA <br /> I <br /> 12 overlay. <br /> 13 <br /> 14 Use the cold milling method for planing unless otherwise specified in the Contract. Do <br /> 15 not use the planer on the final wearing course of new HMA. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Conduct planing operations in a manner that does not tear, break, burn, or otherwise <br /> 18 damage the surface which is to remain. The finished planed surface must be slightly <br /> 19 grooved or roughened and must be free from gouges, deep grooves, ridges, or other <br /> 20 imperfections. The Contractor must repair any damage to the sur-face by the <br /> 21 Contractor's planing equipment, using an Engineer approved method. <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Repair or replace any metal castings and other surface improvements damaged by <br /> 24 planing, as deter-mined by the Engineer. <br /> 25 <br /> 26 A tapered wedge cut must be planed longitudinally along curb lines sufficient to provide I <br /> 27 a minimum of 4 inches of curb reveal after placement and compaction of the final <br /> 28 wearing course. The dimensions of the wedge must be as shown on the Drawings or as <br /> 29 specified by the Engineer. I <br /> 30 <br /> 31 A tapered wedge cut must also be made at transitions to adjoining pavement surfaces ' <br /> 32 (meet lines) where butt joints are shown on the Drawings. Cut butt joints in a straight line <br /> 33 with vertical faces 2 inches or more in height, producing a smooth transition to the <br /> 34 existing adjoining pavement. <br /> 35 I <br /> 36 After planing is complete, planed surfaces must be swept, cleaned, and if required by <br /> 37 the Contract, patched and preleveled. I 38 <br /> 39 The Engineer may direct additional depth planing. Before performing this additional <br /> 40 depth planing, the Contractor must conduct a hidden metal in pavement detection survey <br /> 41 as specified in Section 5-04.3(14)A. <br /> 42 <br /> 43 5-04.3(14)A Pre-Planing Metal Detection Check I <br /> I <br /> N.
