i
IProvidence Family Services Center 9-9M-223-0
 August 25, 1999 Pe Z
I • Structural Considerations: If a composite foundation system is utilized, as
described above, the building will exhibit differential stiffness characteristics during
I an earthquake. The project structural engineer should determine the design
implications of this condition. A more-uniform foundation system could be created
by supporting the entire building on variable-length piles/piers or by using spread
footings in conjunction with a basement.
• Floors: In our opinion, a soil-supported slab-on-grade floor would be suitable for
, use at the southeastern portion of the building but would not be ideally suited for the
northwestem portion. For best performance, the latter portion should be supported
on piles or piers.
I • Retainina Walls: Backfilled concrete walls can be used for shallow below-grade
portions of the building, as well as for loading docks and underground vaults.
I • Shorina and Underninnina Considerations: If any excavations are performed
adjacent to the existing hospital buildings, shoring and/or underpinning systems
Imight be required. We can provide geotechnical criteria for structural design of
such systems if necessary.
• Ravine Setbacks: We recommend that the proposed building be set back at least
50 feet from the existing ravine brink. Pavements and utilities should be set back
Iat least 15 feet for reasons of seismic stability.
• Seismic Code Considerations: Because future stories might be added to the
( building, it could be advantageous to design the structural elements according to a
future building cede. If so,we should be allowed to help develop appropriate design
criteria.
I • On-Site Soil Considerations: Because the on-site soils are moisture-sensitive and
would be readily disturbed when wet, the contractor shouid instali appropriate
I temporary drainage systems at the construction site and should minimize traffic
over exposed subgrades. Ideally, earthwork would be scheduled for lhe summer
and fall months, when drier weather will maximize the potential for reusing on-site
Isoils and when groundwater levels will likely be at their seasonal low.
2.0 SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project site is an existing medical oKce building with adjacent parking lots located at the comer
I of Pacific Avenue and Kromer Avenue on the west side of the existing Providence General Medical
Center's Pacific Campus in Everett, Washington, as shown on the enGosed Location Mep
I (Figure 1). This site consists of a roughiy rectangular parcel that measures about 230 by 480 feet
overall and encompasses approximately 2%z acres.
