I Providence Family Services Center 9-91 M-12723-0
August 25, 1999 Page 7

IOur geotechnical laboratory tests revealed that the on-site scils have a fines(silt and clay)content
on the order of 23 to 32 percent, and a moisture content on the order of 9 to 13 percent. We
I interpret these soils to be currently near or above their optimum moisture contents, and to be highly
sensitivetomoisturecontentvariations. TheenclosedlaboratoytestingsheetsgraphicaU•resent
our test results, and Table 3 summarizes these results.
TABLE 3
LABORATORY TEST RESULTS FOR NON-0RGANIC ONSITE SOILS
Sample lNoisture Gravel Sand SiltlClay
i Soil Type and Source Depth Content Content Content Content
(feet) (percent) (percent) (parcent) (percent)
Upper SAND (B-10/S-4) 12'/:to 14 13 9 59 2
I Weathered Till (B-10/S-5) 17'/: to 19 11 3 65 32
Glacial Till B-10/S-6 22'/to 24 9 c19 58 23
( 4.5 Groundwater Conditions
( At the time of drillirg (January 1999), none of our explorations encountered groundwater within
their termination depths of 14 to 44 feet. Because our explorations were performed during an
extended period of generally wetweather, groundwater conditions may closeiy represent the yearly
( high levels; somewhat lower levels probably occur during the summer and early fall months.
However, perched grounHater may form atop the glacial till horizon during periods of heavy
rainfall. It should also be noted that throughout the year, groundwater levels wouid likely fluctuate
in response to changing precipitation patterns, off-site construction activities, and site utilization.
4.6 Seismic Conditions
Based on our analysis of subsurface exploration logs and our review of published geologic maps,
we interpret the on-site soil conditions to correspond to seismic soil profile type S-C as defined by
Table 16-J of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). Curcent (1996) National Seismic Hazard
( Maps prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey indicate that a peak Cedrock site acceleration
coefficient of about 0.28 is appropriate for an earthquake having a 10-percent probability of
exceedance in 50 years, which corresponds to a retum interval of 475 years. According to Figure
16-2 of the 1997 UBC, the site lies within seismic risk zone 3. If a future version of the UBC is to
be used for structural design purposes,we can aaist the project structural engineer in deveioping
appropriate seismic criteria.
I4.7 Environmental Conditlons
Our on-site geotechnical explorations did not disclose any obvious indications of petroleum orother
I environmental contaminants in the subsurface soils. However, because a specific assessment of
on-site environrrsntal conditions was not included in our scope of work, no substantiated opinions
can be drawn in regards to whether contaminants are present.
I 5 SOFOPROC'99Pmiects5eai0e700Cs.'.':]RoOmsonWrowEenceHospiipwoC ,Q
I
