13 h
Botesch, Nash & Hall
Architects, P.S.
October 11, 2016
City of Everett Permit Services
3200 Cedar Street
Everett, WA 98201
Attn: Meg Haley
RE: Providence Hospital, Pacific Campus
Children's Center Outdoor Canopy
Code Study/Alternate Means and Methods
Dear Meg,
This code study shall supplement the permit set drawings submitted for plan review. It shall
also serve to provide an explanation of meeting the `intent of the code' as outlined in the 2015
IBC Section 104.11 Alternative Materials, Design and Methods of Construction and Equipment.
As you know we had worked with both you and Tony Lee for many months regarding what
would be an acceptable solution for the design of the Providence Children's Center outdoor play
area canopy that would meet the intent of the code. Our code study is based on the following:
Existing First Floor Building Occupancy: 'B'
Existing Building Construction Type: Type IA Sprinkled
Proposed Canopy Construction Type: Type IA
Exterior Wall and Opening Protection Required: Not Required
The proposed outdoor play area canopy is proposed as an 'accessory use' to the `B' occupancy
Children's Center meeting the requirements of Section 508.2.
1) 508.2.2 Allowable Building Height— Unlimited
2) 508.2.3 Allowable Building Area —The existing building First Floor total area is
27,481 SF. The proposed canopy is less than 10% of the story floor area as it is
2,600 SF.
Section 705.3 Buildings on the same lot does not apply as the canopy is considered an
'accessory use' to the existing 'B' Occupancy as referenced to Section 508.2, therefore no
separation is required.
The proposed canopy structure per the drawings consists of concrete footings, a primary and
secondary roof steel framing and non-combustible polycarbonate translucent Class A roof
panels. NFPA 13, Section 8.14.7.2 allows omission of a sprinkler system under the canopy due
to the noncombustible construction.
Type IA Construction Requirements (Table 601):
1) Primary Framing 2 Hours (601 a.)
2) Roof Construction for Secondary Members 1.5 Hours
Page taf..2
