After removal of the unsuitable material, the lot
area was backfilled with cement-treated on-site soil which was placed and compacted in lifts into a firm and unyielding
mass.
Today, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor had completed excavation of the footing and crawl
space area for Lot 249. The exposed foundation subgrade could generally be probed less than 2 inches using a 1/2 inch
diameter soil probe. GeoDesign noted loose and saturated gray-brown silty SAND with gravel along the south edge of the
foundation area that could be probed 2-3 feet using a soil probe which we recommended be removed down to firm and
unyielding soil and replaced with structural fill. The removal of loose and saturated material should extend 1 foot outside of
the footing area for every foot of over-excavation required.
With the exception of the south perimeter of the foundation area, it is the opinion of GeoDesign that the footing subgrade
observed today is currently suitable for support of the intended structure. It is our understanding that the contractor intends
to remove and replace the unsuitable material along the south edge of the foundation area tomorrow.
Lot 278:
Today, GeoDesign noted that the foundation excavation subcontractor had completed excavation of the footing and crawl
space area for Lot 278. The exposed foundation subgrade generally consisted of gray silty SAND with gravel which could
be probed less than 1 inch using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe. GeoDesign noted an approximately 15 feet long section
along the south footing area that could be probed 6 inches using a 1/2 inch diameter soil probe which we recommended be
removed down to firm and unyielding soil and replaced with structural fill.
Relative compaction of the exposed footing subgrade was tested using a Troxler Moisture-Density Gauge; in-place density
tests indicated that the material had been compacted to greater than 95% of its maximum dry density as determined by a
Modified Proctor analysis.
With the exception of the 15' long area along the south perimeter of the foundation area, it is the opinion of GeoDesign that
the footing subgrade observed today is currently suitable for support of the intended structure. The client and contractor
were notified of our observations prior to our departure from the site. A summary of our observations and density tests
taken today can be found in the attached Figure 1 and Nuclear Density Gauge Data.
This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observation of activities relating to geotechnical engineering or environmental services. We rely on the contractor to comply with the plans and
specifications throughout the duration of the project Irrespective of the presence of our representative. Our work does not Include supervision or direction of the contractor, the contractor's employees
or agents. Our firm is not responsible for site safety. This field report is a DRAFT representation of our field observations, testing, and preliminary recommendations. The report can only be considered
final upon review of the GeoDesign project manager,as indicated by initials in the"Reviewed By"section.
10700 Meridian Avenue North,Suite 402 I Seattle,WA 98133 I 206.838.9900
2502 Jefferson Avenue I Tacoma,WA 98402 I 253.203.0095
