CENTRAL UTILITY PLANT PARKING LOT Everett,Washington
APPENDIX B
LABORATORY TESTING
General
Soil samples obtained from the explorations were transported to our laboratory and examined to
confirm or modify field classifications, as well as to evaluate index properties of the soil samples.
Representative samples were selected for laboratory testing consisting of the determination of the
moisture content, percent passing the U.S. No. 200 sieve (percent fines), sieve analysis, and
Atterberg limits. The tests were performed in general accordance with test methods of the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)or other applicable procedures.
Moisture Content Testing
Moisture content tests were completed in general accordance with ASTM D 2216 for
representative samples obtained from the explorations. The results of these tests are presented
on the exploration logs in Appendix A at the depths at which the samples were obtained.
Percent Passing U.S. No. 200 Sieve
Selected samples were "washed" through the U.S. No. 200 mesh sieve to determine the relative
percentages of coarse- and fine-grained particles in the soil. The percent passing value (%F)
represents the percentage by weight of the sample finer than the U.S. No. 200 sieve. These tests
were conducted to verify field descriptions and to determine the fines content for analysis
purposes. The tests were conducted in general accordance with ASTM D 1140, and the results are
shown on the exploration logs in Appendix A at the respective sample depths.
Sieve Analyses
Sieve analysis was performed on a selected sample in general accordance with ASTM D 422 to
determine the sample grain size distribution. The wet sieve analysis method was used to
determine the percentage of soil greater than the U.S. No. 200 mesh sieve. The distribution of the
percentage of soil smaller than the U.S. No. 200 mesh sieve (e.g. silt and clay) was determined for
select samples by hydrometer analysis in accordance with ASTM D 4221. The results of the sieve
analysis were plotted, were classified in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS)and are presented in Figure B-1.
CBR Testing
A CBR test was performed on a composite soil sample in general accordance with ASTM D 1883.
The results of the CBR test are presented in the following table.
Exploration Sample Depth(feet) Soil Type Dry Density(pcf) Percent Maximum Dry Density CBR
101 84 4
Grab 1 SM/ML 112 93 13
Sample
120 99 35
Note:
pcf=pounds per cubic foot
GEOENGINEERSZ October 17,2012 Page 8-1
File No.10738-010-00
