E) Property Description
Describe the nominated property, first with an overall written sketch of the
building and its site, then a discussion the features that create the historical
appearance of the property. These features may include setting, design, style,
special details and craftsmanship and interior finishing. If possible, describe any
changes that have occurred over time and how these changes have affected the
historical character of the building.
The Sittig House at 1927 Rucker Ave., Everett, WA 98201 is a Northwest Stick vernacular home
built in 1893. Few houses this old are still standing in Everett and this may be the northernmost.
That it was built this far north (nearly 10 blocks) of Hewitt Ave., Everett's main east-west street,
is remarkable in itself. It appears in on the Brown Engineering 1893 map. The house appears to
look much as it did when built. Siding, windows and details appear to be original. There have
been no major exterior changes so the historical integrity of the structure has not been
compromised.
F) Statement of Significance
Discuss how the property is significant to or aids in the understanding of Everett
history.
Home appeared in Centennial Structures: Everett's 100-Year-Old Buildings, published by the Everett
Historical Commission in 1993.
Little is known about the original owners John F. and Sophie M. Sittig, who lived here for only a short
time. He was a clergyman according to the marriage certificate and a teamster at some point. Among
the longest living here were the Shlessgers, Wenzlicks,Johnsons, Nguyens and Shepards. Paul F. and
Mary Shlessger lived here approximately from 1928 to 1938. He was a gardener. John A. and Agnes C.
Wenzlick lived here approximately from 1938 to 1956. It appears that he was a millworker and logger
and perhaps both were electricians. Frank J. and Diana C.Johnson lived here approximately from 1958
to 1977. He was a carpenter when they moved in, but for most of their years here they were retired.
Min N. and Long Nguyen lived here approximately from 1982 to 1989. Min was an engineer at John
Fluke Co. Alan C.Jordan has probably lived here the longest, from approximately 1996 to present
(2018).
This property is significant because of its style and appearance. It is located in the northern part of the
historic Bayside Neighborhood. It is also a contributing property in the Rucker-Grand Historic Overlay
Zone. The nomination is on the merits of the exterior of the structure. The original drop siding is on the
house. Some original windows are in the house. It appears that original roof brackets and soffits are
intact. Accompanying pictures show these details.
