t J
•
•
Essential Process Engineering
The Extraction process is now ready to commence. The operator now connects the Butane recovery tank(ASME
BPVC VIII Div 1 designed container of Butane,Item 3)to the same quick coupler where the vacuum pump was
connected. With this connection made the operator turns either a ball valve or needle valve on the recovery tank.
The Liquid Butane compressed at 30 to SO psi is cyphened by the reduced pressure in the upper chamber of the
Closed Loop extractor. Butane flows from the recovery tank towards the upper chamber. Due to the increased
volume and reduced pressure the Liquid Butane changes phase and turns to a gas filling the Upper chamber of the
Closed Loop Extractor.
The operator now sees a rise in the pressure of the Closed Loop Extractor from nearly-30 psi to approximately 20 to
25 psi. The pressure increase is less than that required to compress the Butane. As the liquid changes phase the
temperature of the system decreases based on the rate of liquid Butane allowed to flow.
The recovery tank is set on top of a weight scale to determine the weight of Butane transferred to the Upper
chamber. This is important in recording the efficiency of the transfer.
The operator now doses the ban valve or needle valve on the recovery tank and removes the Ball check quick coupler
from the upper chamber. No gas is released due to the use of the two Ball check quick couplers which are similar to
Hydraulic connections.
The Butane gas(temperature/pressure dependent)now rests with the Trim within the Material vessel extracting
oils. As the oils are extracted they permeate through the filter into the collection vessel similar to a Drip Coffee
machine.
The temperature of the system normalizes to room temperature during this phase of the process.
Once approximately 5 minutes has elapsed (per Material vessel)the operator prepares to recover the Butane gas.
All valves and connections are closed.
5/3/2016 Project:1604141_BrianKnopf Extractor Page 12 of 34
EPE Doc.160414ER Confidential-Proprietary Document Butane USE ONLY
