• <br /> Each such appliance shall be installed in an approved <br /> location satisfactory to the Building Offical and to <br /> local and State fire prevention agencies. <br /> (b) All storage-type water heaters and hot water boilers <br /> deriving heat from fuels or types of energy other than gas, <br /> shall be provided with, in addition to the primary temper- <br /> ature controls, an over-temperature safety protection de- <br /> vice constructed, listed and installed in accordance with <br /> nationally recognized applicable standards for such devices. <br /> Section 2307 - Enclosures and Combustion Air <br /> (a) Fuel burning water heaters shall be assured a suf- <br /> ficient supply of fresh air for proper fuel combustion <br /> and ventilation. <br /> (b) Provisions shall be made to supply fresh air to the <br /> space in which fuel-burning water heaters are located if <br /> the volume in cubic feet of this space is less than: <br /> 1. One-twentieth of the maximum rated input in <br /> B.T.U. ' s of gas-burning water heaters, and <br /> other affected gas appliances, except listed <br /> ranges, hot plates, and refrigerators, in <br /> such space. <br /> 2 . One-tenth of the maximum rated input in <br /> B.T.U. ' s of all water heaters and other af- <br /> fected appliances burning solid and liquid <br /> fuel in such space. <br /> (c) Methods of supplying air. <br /> Where provisions for fresh air are required in this <br /> section, one of the following methods shall be used: <br /> 1. Permanent openings or ducts leading from <br /> the water heater location to other interior <br /> areas, except unventilated attics, which <br /> meet the minimum required volume specified <br /> in subsection (b) of this section. <br /> If such openings or ducts convey air from an attic <br /> space, the attic space shall be ventilated by fresh <br /> air openings or louvers on a vertical wall or at two <br /> different levels or elevations. <br /> 2 . Permanent openings or ducts leading from the <br /> water heater enclosure to the outside of the <br /> building. <br /> 3 . For gas-burning water heaters, all openings <br /> or ducts shall have a total unobstructed <br /> area not less than that shown in Table 13-1. <br /> For heaters burning solid or liquid fuels, the required <br /> areas shall be one and one-half times those required <br /> for gas-burning heaters. <br /> A minimum of six (6) inches unobstructed space across <br /> the entire front of the water heater shall extend <br /> from the floor to at least the top of the appliance. <br /> Areas of ducts or openings shall be equally divided <br /> with one-half (1/2) of the total required area within <br /> the upper twelve (12) inches of the appliance enclosure <br /> and one-half (1/2) not more than twelve (12) inches <br /> above the base of the lowest appliance within the en- <br /> closure. Required openings shall not be less than <br /> three (3) inches in least dimension. <br /> -5- <br />
