EVERETT
WASHINGTON
City of Everett Human Needs Grant
January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019
Exhibit A
Program Summary
Organization &Program: Volunteers of America: Hunger Prevention Services-Everett Food Bank
This request for the Everett Food Bank aligns with the Everett Human needs priorities of promoting health and
healing for youth, seniors and persons with disabilities and/or other social or economic barriers by providing
supplemental, nutritious food to each of these target populations.
The Everett Food Bank mission is to provide a nutritionally-dense and culturally appropriate food selection that
meets the supplemental food needs of our consumers and to reduce barriers to access. We measure this by our ability
to provide 3 days(9 meals)worth of food to each household that asks for help.A recent change in service delivery
allows consumers to visit twice a month at any of the VOAWW main food bank or the mobile pop-ups food
pantries.
Another key program objective is to provide food to as many eligible community members as possible through
increasing our food to children through weekend backpack programs.
Additionally,we are expanding our grocery rescue and fresh produce inventory and anticipate new distribution
locations.
We are seeking funding to support our food delivery operations to very low income and low-income residents
throughout Everett with partner-supported locations and increased variety of culturally appropriate and nutritionally-
dense foods.Components of this include 1)food sourcing;2)increased food quality&selection;3)local business
and organization partnerships;and 4)volunteer engagement opportunities.
When a guest arrives at one of the VOAWW's operated food bank or pantry, they are treated respect and dignity. As
they move from check-in/confirmation of eligibility, they are assist with shopping&selection of products in
inventory.These selections include non-perishable food;breads;meats;fresh produce;personal hygiene items;baby
supplies(food, diapers&wipes);and pet food and other household items when available.Guests are assisted with
boxes and bags of groceries to their point of transportation. The weight and size of the supplemental foods make our
mobile pop-up food pantries a necessity to those without reliable transportation or those using public transportation.
The food bank manager is key to outreach;ordering food from Food Lifeline,Northwest Harvest,and other vendors;
reporting&administration;scheduling pick-up&delivery of grocery rescues,local harvest donations,and food
drives critical to the on-going inventory of food. The food bank supervisor organizes and runs the daily operations
of food distribution.A volunteer coordinator recruits and trains individual and group volunteers from residents,
schools, service groups, churches, businesses, the Navy, unions, and foundations to provide a quality experience to
the consumers.A full-time driver picks up grocery rescue from many grocery stores and donations from large food
drives.
Consistent with VOAWW's overall mission, the Hunger Prevention Program is a vital service for all peoples. Our
program's priorities are to reach the most vulnerable residents—children, seniors, individuals living with
disabilities, and families living in poverty or low-income situations. We deliver the services without bias,
judgement,or discrimination based on race,gender-identity,religious affiliation, nationality, disability,or any other
legally protected class.
We serve the low-income and fixed income individuals in need of supplemental food support. These are consumers
who often do not receive enough support through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program(SNAP)Food
Stamp Benefits,or are over the SNAP income threshold, thus needing another source for basic needs support.
2019 Human Needs Contracts 7
