NMI
5. As far as my agreements with the City of Everett, my wife and I met with the Appeals
Board on December 6,1990 and were granted permission to use mini storage space for
band practice. One of the requirements was the installation of man doors on any large
units. This was done on ten(10)Units,five(5)in Building A and five(5)IN Building B.
To summarize our situation: You gave me a list of 27 visits to 3816 Smith Avenue by the Fire
Department, covering an eleven(11)year period. At least six(6)were calls that I made myself
or knew about, all of which were attributed to my mini storage and resulted from actions done
or caused by street people who live under the bridge by the Everett Mission.
I have owned the mini storage for nearly 39 years. I have rented to approximately 16,000 to
19,000 different tenants during that time. I have always tried to abide by any laws concerning
my mini storage. To suggest I condone living in my units is not correct. As far as illicit activities
the only ones I know about are done by the street people. I cooperate with all law
enforcement agencies and have even induded that procedure in my rental agreement.
As I stated in my first sentence I run a tight business. I have 20 digital cameras covering
nearly all areas(outside of the units)and in the building aisleways. The results are recorded in
a computer. I also have a security system that records in a computer. This includes login date
and time, every time the door is opened or closed. It also records the date and time the tenant
signs out. The system turns on all units at 3:00 am each day. These too are recorded in a
computer.
To summarize with these two systems. I can know what has happened as well as watch
what is happening at any point in time. I have run a good business the whole 39 years. I have
been invited to join the Better Business Bureau several times. However, the last seven or eight
years have been very difficult due to the mass arrival of the street people. All around my
business, the environment has become a cesspool of human beings, who have no respect for
anything, not even themselves.
It is truly regrettable,on my part, that you have developed such a low regard for my
business. As an overall viewpoint, removing all of non-band music tenants and reducing the
number of bands will only make the situation worse as there will be fewer eyes and voices to
deal with the street people. If there is anything I can do to improve your opinion of my
business,please let me know.
Sincerely,
Philip M.Es ep,Owner
The Storehouse
CC File, R Stone,Atty
Tony Lee,Everett Building Official
Kevin Fagerstrom, Everett Code Enforcement
