 .
JID L.NELSON AND ASSOCIATES, INC.
 Consultmg Enginterins Geology
 April 7, 1989
Pro,ect No. 3989
 Page 6
found during our exploration. An allowaCle soil bearing pressure of 2500
pounds per square foot fsf) could be used for deslgn of shallow footings
placed a minimcm of 18 inches below flnish grade within the structural f111 .
The sugqested so11 Eearing capacities use a factor of sefety of 2.5 and is
based on the folluwing conditions: '
 1. All footings should be founded intu the structural fill
soils as described above, a minimum of 18 inches below
finish adJacent grade, and at least : fet above the highest
perched water levels found during our exploration.
2. All footing excavatlons shouid De roared such that a
dense, nonyielding, uniform soil condi 'i;n has been
established prior to placement of footirg concrete.
3. All footings should be sized according to the anticlpated
wa11 or column ioadings, and the above so11 bearing ralues.
Minimum footing widths of 18 and 24 inches are recommended
for all contlnuos and Tsolated footinys, respectively'.
i 5. All footings should be free of ponded water and sloughed
or water ioosened soils prior to plecement of footing
 concrete.
Ground settlements due to structural loeds are exoected to be less then one
(1) inch total and one-half (1/2) inch differentiel over the building erea.

Slab-On-Grade Preparation
Intertor slabs-on-grade should be placed upon the structural fill , upon which
a vapor barrier ccnslsting of visqueen end a 4 inch sand or pea grevel layer
 hes been piaced.
 Retalning Mells
The deslgn lateral earth pressures atting on retaining Hails are a functton of
the type of Nall (for example, yfelding or non-yielding), the method of
construction, and the type of soil used behind the wall . For fixed or non-
y.telding Ma11s, we recomnend that the "at rest" condition should be assumed,
and that en equivalent fluid pressure of 55 ibs. per cubic foot be used for
design purposes. For ylelding walis, such as cantllever walls, the "active"
condition may be assumed end an equlvalent fluid pressure of 35 lbs. per cubic
