No subsurface seepage was noted in the test pits during our study. We
anticipate tha[ aaapage would be observed in the subsoils during wettei
periods of the year after periods of rainfall.
DISCUSSION AND RECOtRtENDATIONS
General
Based on our study, we conclude that the proposed building may be constructed
na planned, provided the recommendations presented in tlis report are
incorporated into tiie project design end construction. The primary
geotechnical feature that will affect the proposed construction is the
presence of as much as 13.5 feet of loese fill beneath the building area. In
addition, a recently censtructed rockery with a maximum height of about four
feet is present along r:he north and east sides of the site, adjacen[ to the
planned building walls at [hese locations.
The existing fi11s present on the site will not provide adequate support for
the building without undergoing considerable differentiel aettlemen[s. In
addition, shnllov fomidations may impose excessive pressures on the existing
rockery which may collapse under these pressures. The proposed buildings
mey, however, be supported on conventional spread footings and slab-on-&rade
floora bearing on a structural fill mat after overexcavating at lenst two
feet below foundation areas. Other geotechnical factors to be taken into
consideration in the design and construction of the building are as follovs:
1. Foundations for the building should be extended down to a level
below that of the base of the rockery. In this manner, founda[:on
loads ahould not affect the rockery. It is possible that the
rockery may collepse et the time [hat excavations a*e being made to
ex[end the building foundations below [he level of the rockery. If
[his occurs, the foundation xall will need to 6e designed as a
retaining wall along the north and east sides of [he building.
2. The exis[ing fills should be removed to a minimum depth of two feet
belw foundation bottoms and replaced by structural fills. In slab
and pavement areas, the dep[h of overexcavation should be at least
12 inches.
3. Building :oundations may be constructed as conven[ional spresd
footings supported on structural fill soils. Floors may be
constructed as slabs-on-grade supported on structural fill.
4. The existing fill soils con[ain large amoun[s af debris and it is
un7ikely that it will be possible to reuse these soils as structural
fills on the site. Hence, it is recommended that you plan to impor[
all structural fills that will be rzquired on the site.
This report has been prepared for specific applica[ion to this project in
accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices for the
exclusive use of Norwestco and their representatives. No other warranty,
expressed or implied, is made.
