The following sections of this report present more detailed recommendations
for the various geotechnical engineering aspec[s of the project which should
ba incorporated into the project design and construction.

' Fuundations

The proposed building should be supported on continuous and/or isolated
apread footings bearing on a minimum of two feet of structural fill placed
below footing bottoms. The structural fill should be placed after removing
the existing fills in the footing areas to the designared depths. The
removal should extend two feet below footing bottoms as well ns tao .et
laterally outside the footings in both directions. All footings should
extend to a minimum dep[h of 18 inches below the loiaest adjacent final grade.
Anq interior footing areas should also be overexcava[ed and replaced with
structural fill.
T'he rockery adjecent to the east and north sides of the building may
complicete the overexcavation process. The perimeter footings along thrse
sides of the building should be pleced at a sufficient depth so that they
impose no additional lateral pressure on the existing rockery. We auggest
the footings be based at a level at or below the bese of the rockery. The
recommended overexcavation depth and width for foo[ing support should then be
provided below [het footing level.
Continuous footings bearing on structural fill may be designed for an
allowable beering pressure of 1,500 pounds per squere foot (psf), for dead
plue live loeds. A minimum width of 12 inches should be used for continuous
footings. Individual spread footings mny alsa be designed for a allowable
bearing pressure of 1,500 paf and should heve a minimum size of 18 inches. A
one-third increase in the above bearing pressures may be used when
cansidering wind or seismic loads. All footings should be provided with
ateel reinforcement in accordance with structural requirements.
To verify that footing bearing surfaces are satisfactory, that excessive
disturbance does not occur during excavation, and to observe compliance with
our recommendations, we recamend that all foo[ing excavations be examined by
our representative prior to placing concrete. A minimum of tvo aorking days
notice should be gLven us prior to examinetion of foundation excavations.
Settlements
We an[icipate that the maximum total set[lements for the building supported
on an adequately compacted structural fill mat vill be less than one inch.
The maximum long-term differential settlement should be less than one-half
inch.
Projec[ No. T-233, Pae 5
