ti
' Site Prevaration end Gradina
i

We assume the in:tial grading on the site would be [he overexcava[ion of [he
building area. Excavations should be made to remove the existing fills in
r! the building area and to provide the recommended minimum thickness of
structural fill beneath the footings and slabs for the structure. At this
„ level, the resulting subgrade .' building areas and areas where structural
fill is to be placed should 6e proofrolled, Any loose areas found during the
proofrolling process should be excavated and replaced with structural fill or
crushed rock to a depth that vill provide a stable base benea[h the
atructural fill.
All atructural fill :or the building and the upper one foot of pavemenl• areas
ahould be com?acted to at leest 95 percent of the ASTM D-1557 Maximum Dry
Density. Below the one fooe level in pavement areas, we feei that a relative
compection oi 90 percent xill be adequate provided that the subgrade is
stable and non-yielding.
j The exiating fills on the site contain large amounts of debris and it is
unlikely that it will be possible to reuse [hese materials for structural
fill on [he site. Also, where the debris amounts are low, it should be noted
that the site soils are relatively ailty end it will not be possible to
` compact these soile when they are too wet. Hence, it may not be feasible to
f' use these soils for structural fill during rainy weather. We recommend that
p any soils to be imported fur use as structural fill be evaluated by Terra
Associatea, Inc, before they are brought onto the site. For impor[ed fill
',. in wet weather grading, we auggest tliat no more than five percent of [he soil
fraction passing [he 3/4-inch Standard U.S. sieve be finer than the No, 200
sieve.
Structural fill shculd be placed in horizon[al lifts not exceeding eight
inches in uncompacted thickness. In-place density tests should be performed
to verify that adequate compac[ion is being obteined.
.
Pavement Areae
.
All new parking and drivexay areas may be supported on the recompacted native
fill soils on a minimum of twelve (12) inches of structural fi11 placed in
accordance with the site preparation section of this report. The upper
twelve (12) inches of [he pavement subgrade should be compacted to 95% of the
maximum dry density (AS1M D-1557).
Regardlesa of the compaction effort, all subgrade areas must be in a stable,
non-yielding condition prior to paving. Softened areas in the subgrade
should be overexcavated and replaced with ;[ruc[ural fills to achieve a
stable subgrade. Tne use of a course of asphalt treted base (ATB) to
pro[ect [he subgrade after excavation should be considered if work will take
place during wet wea[her.
Project No. T-233, }'age 7
