I <br /> 1 8-02.3(8) Planting I <br /> 2 8-02.3(8)A Dates and Conditions for Planting <br /> 3 No plant material shall be planted until it has been inspected and accepted for <br /> 4 planting by the Engineer. Rejected material shall be removed from the project site <br /> 5 immediately. All plants for the project or a sufficient quantity to plant 1-acre of the <br /> 6 site, whichever is less, shall be received on site prior to the Engineer beginning <br /> 7 inspection of the plants. <br /> 8 <br /> 9 Under no circumstances will planting be permitted during unsuitable soil or <br /> 10 weather conditions as determined by the Engineer. Unsuitable conditions may <br /> 11 include frozen soil, freezing weather, saturated soil, standing water, high winds, <br /> 12 heavy rains, and high water levels. The ground shall be moist at the time of <br /> 13 planting. All planting shall be accomplished during the following periods: <br /> II <br /> 14 <br /> 15 1. Non-Irrigated Plant Material <br /> 16 Western Washington (West of the Cascade Mountain Crest) — October 1 <br /> 17 to March 1. <br /> 18 Eastern Washington (East of the Cascade Mountain Crest) — October 1 <br /> 19 to November 15. <br /> 20 I 21 2. Irrigated Plant Material <br /> 22 <br /> 23 In irrigated areas, plant material shall not be installed until the irrigation i <br /> 24 system is fully operational and accepted by the Engineer. Trees and shrubs <br /> 25 may be planted in irrigated areas during the non-irrigated planting window <br /> 26 before the irrigation system is functional with the written concurrence of the <br /> 27 Engineer only if the irrigation system is guaranteed to be operational prior to <br /> 28 the end of the non-irrigated planting window. <br /> 29 <br /> 30 8-02.3(8)B Plant Installation <br /> 31 The Contractor shall handle plant material in the following manner: <br /> 32 <br /> 33 1. Root systems shall be kept covered and damp at all times. Plant material <br /> 11 <br /> 34 shall be kept in containers until the time of planting. <br /> 35 <br /> 36 2. Roots shall not be bunched, curled, twisted, or unreasonably bent when <br /> 37 placed in the planting hole. Bare root plant material shall be dormant at <br /> 38 the time of harvesting and planting. The root systems of all bare root <br /> 39 plant material shall be dipped in a slurry immediately prior to planting. <br /> 40 <br /> 41 3. Plant material supplied in wrapped balls shall not be removed from the <br /> 42 wrapping until the time of planting at the planting location. The root <br /> 43 system of balled plant material shall be moist at the time of planting. Root <br /> 44 balls shall be loosened prior to planting. All burlap, baskets, string, wire <br /> 45 and other such materials shall be removed from the hole when planting <br /> 46 balled plants. <br /> 47 <br /> 48 4.
