I 1 8-02.3(8) Planting I 2 8-02.3(8)A Dates and Conditions for Planting 3 No plant material shall be planted until it has been inspected and accepted for 4 planting by the Engineer. Rejected material shall be removed from the project site 5 immediately. All plants for the project or a sufficient quantity to plant 1-acre of the 6 site, whichever is less, shall be received on site prior to the Engineer beginning 7 inspection of the plants. 8 9 Under no circumstances will planting be permitted during unsuitable soil or 10 weather conditions as determined by the Engineer. Unsuitable conditions may 11 include frozen soil, freezing weather, saturated soil, standing water, high winds, 12 heavy rains, and high water levels. The ground shall be moist at the time of 13 planting. All planting shall be accomplished during the following periods: II 14 15 1. Non-Irrigated Plant Material 16 Western Washington (West of the Cascade Mountain Crest) — October 1 17 to March 1. 18 Eastern Washington (East of the Cascade Mountain Crest) — October 1 19 to November 15. 20 I 21 2. Irrigated Plant Material 22 23 In irrigated areas, plant material shall not be installed until the irrigation i 24 system is fully operational and accepted by the Engineer. Trees and shrubs 25 may be planted in irrigated areas during the non-irrigated planting window 26 before the irrigation system is functional with the written concurrence of the 27 Engineer only if the irrigation system is guaranteed to be operational prior to 28 the end of the non-irrigated planting window. 29 30 8-02.3(8)B Plant Installation 31 The Contractor shall handle plant material in the following manner: 32 33 1. Root systems shall be kept covered and damp at all times. Plant material 11 34 shall be kept in containers until the time of planting. 35 36 2. Roots shall not be bunched, curled, twisted, or unreasonably bent when 37 placed in the planting hole. Bare root plant material shall be dormant at 38 the time of harvesting and planting. The root systems of all bare root 39 plant material shall be dipped in a slurry immediately prior to planting. 40 41 3. Plant material supplied in wrapped balls shall not be removed from the 42 wrapping until the time of planting at the planting location. The root 43 system of balled plant material shall be moist at the time of planting. Root 44 balls shall be loosened prior to planting. All burlap, baskets, string, wire 45 and other such materials shall be removed from the hole when planting 46 balled plants. 47 48 4.
