I I1 5. Plants shall be placed with the crown at the finished9 rade. In their final 2 position, plants shall have their top true root (not adventitious root) no I 3 more than 1 inch below the soil surface, no matter where that root was 4 located in the original root ball or container. The backfill material, 5 including container and root ball soil, shall be thoroughly watered on the I 6 same day that planting occurs regardless of season. 7 8 When installing plants, the Contractor shall dig planting holes three times the 9 diameter of the container or root ball size. Any glazed surface of the planting hole I 10 shall be roughened prior to planting. 11 12 8-02.3(8)C Pruning, Staking, Guying, and Wrapping I 13 Plants shall be pruned at the time of planting, only to remove minor broken or 14 damaged twigs, branches or roots. Pruning shall be performed with a sharp tool 15 and shall be done in such a manner as to retain or to encourage natural growth 1 16 17 characteristics of the plants. All other pruning shall be performed only after the plants have been in the ground at least 1 year and when plants are dormant. 18 19 Trees shall only be staked when so noted in the Plans. Each tree shall be staked I 20 or guyed before completion of the backfilling in accordance with the details shown 21 in the Plans. 22 I 23 Trees shall be wrapped when so noted in the Plans. 24 25 8-02.3(9) Seeding, Fertilizing, and Mulching I 26 For all seed, the Contractor shall furnish the following documentation to the Engineer: 27 28 1. The state or provincial seed dealer license and endorsements. 29 30 2. Copies of Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) test results on 31 each lot of seed. Test results shall be within six months prior to the date of 32 application. I 33 34 8-02.3(9)A Dates for Application of Seed 35 Unless otherwise allowed by the Engineer, the Contractor shall apply seed for I 36 permanent erosion control during the following periods: 37 Western Washington1 Eastern Washington I (West of the Cascade Mountain (East of the Cascade Mountain Crest) Crest) March 1 through May 15 October 1 through November 15 September 1 through October 1 I 1Seeding may be allowed outside these dates when allowed by the Engineer. 38 39 All roadway excavation and embankment ground surfaces that are completed to 40 final grades shall be prepared and seeded during the first available seeding 41 window. When environmental conditions are not conducive to satisfactory results, 42 the Engineer may suspend the seeding Work until such time that the desired 1 43 results are likely to be obtained.
