Public comment: No public comment.
Michael asked if this is appropriate time to give names for plaza. Paul responded it
could be a general discussion, or it could be addressed in a motion forum. Michael
stated that from reading the information provided, "City plaza" is too generic. The name
doesn't identify where it is specifically located. As time progresses, there will be many
city plazas. Michael mentioned "Wetmore" or "Theatre Plaza". He prefers "Wetmore"
since the name is as a historical figure and at the same time identifies the location of the
plaza. Tina stated that we already have a downtown plaza at the Snohomish County
campus that has music and other events. Tina prefers "Theatre Plaza" because it
identifies Everett with cultural events. Art asked to bend the rules, and said he would
like to ask Mr. Ramstad if he had any input. Dave Ramstad stated Jan captured what
is the Historical Commission's intent in Jan's minutes from its November meeting.
Dave stated that Everett is a city many have driven by, but, when they do arrive, they
are enthralled with the downtown area. The old image is still an impression people still
have of the city. "Wetmore" is preferable since it has a historical prespective and will
lead visitors to the proper location. Both "Wetmore" and "Theatre" are preferable.
Art's vote will be "Theatre Plaza" and stated it helps locate the plaza. Dianne added
the purpose is for a gathering place and one way is a name that is creative and
descriptive. Dianne prefers "Theatre Place" or "Plaza". Sarah has similar sentiment
and agrees the name needs to be more descriptive. Sarah leans more toward
"Theatre" to bring more of the art presence to the park atmosphere and the name needs
to be short and succinct. Sarah's recommendation is" Theatre Plaza". Tina also
mentioned that people still think of Everett as a working class town, and "Theatre" will
help shift the impression. Tina asked if there is a motion for a name for the Plaza.
Sarah asked Michael to reinterate why he preferred "Wetmore". He pointed out there
are several theatres in the Everett downtown area. Not only is there confusion of
location, but he's also drawn to historical perspective, and the street name makes it
easily identifiable. Sarah is in the middle and appreciates Michael's input on the
"Wetmore" historical name. Paul stated that everyone is willing to contribute and a
recommendation of two names may be appropriate based on this discussion. This will
help the Historical Commission to narrow the list to what really speaks to you as a park
board member. Art agreed that it would be feasible to make more than one
recommendation. Michael stated that all board members felt that "City Plaza" was too
broad. Michael thought it was a quick and easy name to get the project done. Paul
addressed that getting a name as soon as possible would be beneficial to branding the
plaza. "City Plaza" as a submitted name was to get the process going and descriptive
enough to get the "working title" to start the naming process. Tina asked the board if
they want to send one or two names. Sarah would like to provide the park board
minutes on the naming process. After the discussion, it was confirmed by Paul the
board would recommend two names with "Theatre Plaza" as the preferred
recommendation and "Wetmore Plaza" as a second recommendation. Tina asked
board if comments were closed. Gary Allen stated that people will call it whatever they
want to call it. Gary recommended "Wetmore Plaza". Sarah asked Paul to note in the
minutes the length of name and the signage issues. If, there is to be a monument sign,
2IPage
