GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Mr. Arthur Skotdal
, — c/o Dykeman Architects E-6225
July 27, 1993 Page 9
— Spt.mir Desian Considerations
The Puget Lowland is classified as a Seismic Zone 3 by the Uniform Building Code (UBC).
— The largest earthquakes in the Puget Lowland are wdespread and have been subcrustal
events, ranging in depth from thirty (30) to fifty five (55) miles. Such deep events have
exhibited no surface faulting.
Baed on the subsurface information obtained during our'field exploration, it is our opinion
the liquefaction potential at the site is negligible due to the presence of dense over-
consolidated soils and no near surfacQ groundwater table.
The UBC Earthquake regulations contain a static force procedure and a dynamic force
procedure for design base shear calculations. Based on the encountered soil conditions,
it is our opinion that an S factor of Sz = 1.2 should be used for the static force procdure
as outlined in Section 2334 of the 1991 UBC. For the dynamic force proce!dure outlined
in Section 2335 af the 1991 UBC, the curve for rock and stiff soil (Sofl Type 1) shouid
be used on Figre 23-3, Normalized Response Spectra Shapes.
Excavations and Siooes
The following information is provided solely as a service to our client. Under no
circumstances should this information be interpreted to mean that ECI is assuming
responsibility for construction site safety or the Contractor's activities; such responsibility
is not befng implied and should not be inferred.
As mentioned previously, we anticipate significant cuts will be required in orderto achieve
' . l the proposed building subgrade elevations. These cuts will range from approximately
' :: ` eleven 111) to 'ourteen (14) feet along the west perimeter of the excavation, and fifteen
(15) to eighteen i18) feet along the eastern perimoter. It appears that there is adequate
I room for the excvation slopes to be laid back at safe angles using an open cut method
along Colby and HEwitt Avenues, and along the eastern perimeter of the excavation in the
, interior of the site, provided the excavation slopes are no greater than the limits specified
` l in local, state and federal safety regulations. The slope should be covered with visqueen
to prevent ravelling during rainy weather.
,g
:.,._
I
-.
_
,
_ I Earth Consultants, Inc.
f r .,
