3
IV. Drainage
A. Inspect culverts at least once per year and immediately after significant storm
events.
B. Keep ditches and drainage channels at inlets and outlets of culverts clear of
obstructions and functioning as intended. Clear brush from around inlets and
outlets to a distance equal to two diameters of the pipe.
C. Maintain head walls at inlets and energy dissipators at outlets.
D. Minimize silt bearing road surface and ditch runoff from entering any Typed
waters or wetlands.
V. Structures
A. Repair any bridges, cattle guards, fences, or other road structures as required.
VI. Waterbars
A. Roads that have an extended absence of commercial activity may benefit from the
drainage enhancement provided by driveable waterbars.
B. Construct driveable waterbars immediately downgrade of each ditch relief culvert.
Avoid installing intermediate waterbars between culverts because waterbars are
intended to act as safety valves® for failed culverts, not as full time drainage
structures. If it is necessary to install intermediate waterbars, they should not be
keyed into the ditch. They should function only as road surface drains.
C. Waterbars should be skewed approximately 30 degrees from perpendicular to the
road centerline on roads in excess of 3 percent grade.
D. Waterbars should intercept the ditch and be keyed into the road cut slope and be
outsloped to provide positive drainage with minimum maintenance.
Outlets should be on stable locations. Use excavated ballast to prevent erosion in
the bottom of the waterbar. Intermediate waterbars should not be keyed into the
ditch. They should function only as road surface drains.
VII. Emergency Storm Maintenance
A. As stated earlier in this document, active forest roads should be inspected at least
once per year and after significant storm events. In preparation for the annual
winter storm season(typically November through February),Northwest Region
State Lands Personnel should be assigned specific road systems for the purpose of
storm patrol duty.
Private To State RUP 10 of 12 Road Use Permit No..55-091210
5 ?
