PAge 2
SU6SURFACE
The subsurace conditions were explored by excavating eleven test pits and drilling two borings at
the approximate locations shoxm on the Site EXploration Plan, Pidte 2. Our expioration program
was 6ased on the proposed construdion, anHcipated tubsurtace cond'Rions and those encountered
cluring eloration, and the scope of work oullined in our proposal.
'i'he test pits were exeavated on June 20, 2005 with a rubber-tired hackhce. A geotechnical
engineer from our staff observed the excavation process, logged tha test p'ts, and obtained
representative samples of the soli encountered, "GYab" samples of selected subsurface soii were
co!lected from the backhoe bucket. The Yest Pit Logs are attached to this report as Plates 3
through 8.
The borings were drillod on Juty 21, 2005, using a track-mounted, hollow-stem auger drlll.
Samples were taken at 5-toot intervals with a standard penetration sampler. This splft-spoon
sampler, which has a 2-inch outside diameter, is driven into the soil with a 140-pound hammer
falling 30 inches. The number of blows required to advance the sampler a given distance is an
indication of the soll density ar consistenry. A geotechnical enginee[from our staff observed tha
drilling process, logged the test borings, qnd obtalned representative samples of the soil
encountered, The Test Boring Logs are attached as Plates 9 and 10.
Sofl Condfflons
The test plts generally enCountened uncompacted fiil and soft silts with organic layers to the
maximum explored depth of the test pits. Numerous ohstruct!ons, such as household
garbage and constrction debris were encountered in the test pits. The test pits were
explored to depths of 3.5 to 13 feet below existing grade, All test pits were exca+rdted urrtil
cither the backhoe ccu!d not oenettate through the debris, or the mabmum reach of the
backhoe was attained. Moderaie to severe caving Was observed in most of the test pits in
the ►oose fill soils.
Boring 1, drilled at the northem end of the proposed restaurant footprint, encouered an
upper soil unit of approximateN 14 feet of soft silt and neat with ornanics. Underiying the
loase soils was dense sand and siky sand that became very dense at appmximately 25 feet
below existing grade. The very dense solis extended to the maximum eXploted depth of the
boring. Boring 2, driiled near the westem end of the proposed retail building fotpriM,
encountered epproximateiy 24 feet of soft silt end loose silty sand underlain by dense to
very dense, sandy silt, that extanded to the maximum explored depth of the boring. Both
borings were each explored to a depth of 31.5 feet beloW eXiSUng grade.
Groundwatcr Confions
Groundwater seepage was observed at a depth of 3 to 13 feet in the test pits and 6orings.
Caving was otserved in a majority of the test pits. The test pits and borings were left open
for only a short time period, Therefore, the seepage levels on the logs repYesent the
location of transient water seepage and may not indicate the staHc groundwater level.
Groundwater levels encountered during drilling can be deceptive, because seepage into the
boriig can be blocked or slowed by the auger kself.
It should be noted that groundwater levels vary seasonally with rainfall and other factos,
The test pits and burings were perfortned during an extended period of dry weather(n July.
GEOTECH CONSULTANTS,INC,
