S
Mr. Mcllvain
CRM Architects&Planners, Inc.
Plan Check Number: B1805-010, First Review
August 1, 2018
building surface shall be used in the design. The headers should also consider concurrent
out-of-plane loading due to canopy thrust loads. See IBC Section 1609.1.
d. A detail shall be provided specifying the interconnection of the individual boards to provide
composite action. The connections shall have adequate capacity to transfer shear between
the members due to weak-axis bending. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
e. The headers shall be provided with out-of-plane connections to transfer loads to the
supporting king studs.
f. The king studs shall be evaluated for additional out-of-plane loading from the headers.
16. Detail 10/S7.0 shows the typical connection between the steel beams and columns. See IBC
Section 2205.1. The following comments should be addressed: See structural response letter
a. The spacing and edge distances for the bolts should be specified. See AISC 360-10 Section
33.
b. Welds between the stiffener plate and beam should be specified. See AISC 360-10 Section
32.
17. Detail 2/S3.0 specifies a double top plate and bolts at 16-inch spacing. Details 9/S7.0 and
10/S7.0 appear to show a single plate and specify bolts at 24-inch spacing. The details should
be reviewed and revised for consistency. The minimum edge distance for the bolts to the
beam flange should be specified. See IBC Sections 107.2.1 and 2205.1, and AISC 360-10
Section 33. See structural response letter
18.The project appears to include a wood-framed canopy at Grid A/3.9 per Sheet A5.1 and Detail
8/S7.0. See IBC Section 1604.1 and 1604.4. The following comments should be addressed:
a. A plan view shall be provided clarifying the canopy construction. Notably, the load path
between the blocking at the clevis attachment and the joists is not clear.
b. Additional detailing for the blocking at both the wall studs and canopy joists shall be
provided. The size of the blocking and the minimum edge distances for the bolts shall be
specified. The attachment of the blocking to the framing shall be specified.
c. Details specifying the construction of the steel plate connections to the blocking shall be
provided.
d. Calculations for the design of the studs and headers supporting the canopy shall be
provided for review. The design shall consider load combinations per IBC Equations 16-10,
16-12, and 16-13. The directions of wind and snow loading, both on the roof and wall
surfaces, shall be aligned to create the maximum loading condition. The design shall
consider moments due to opposing trust loads in the canopy connections. The design shall
consider combined flexural-axial or biaxial bending as occurs for the supporting members.
e. Calculations for the design of the canopy connections to the wood studs and canopy joists
shall be submitted for review. Calculations shall include the plate connections, bolts,
blocking, and connections to the wood framing. The calculations shall include concurrent
shear and torsion due to eccentric loading. The calculations shall verify that the torsion
does not result in splitting of the studs due to perpendicular-to-grain loading.
