GROUP
Task 5: MCC modifications [several locations]
• Remove underground 120/240V 1-phase service from FWPS#2 to FWPS #1. Re-feed affected equipment from an
FWPS#1 source.
• Replace Finish Water Pump#3 (250hp) soft start with VFD.
• Replace MCCs HFB and HFBG with panelboard and discrete starters.
• Replace MCCs HFWPS and HFWPSG with single MCC, or panelboard with discrete starters.
• Replace MCC HW and HWGA with single MCC. Remove pump selection plug box and incorporate dedicated
starters (2 soft start and 2 across-the-line) in new MCC.
Fuel System
• Current fuel tank volumes estimated
1. Existing tank serving 650kw-2500 gallons
2. Existing tank serving 1250kw-6000 gallons.
• New Cummins generators -72 hours runtime
1. New 1000kw 100%for 72 hour req is 6000 gallons (New Tank)
2. New 1500kw 80%for 72 hour req is 6000 gallons (Existing Tank)
• Design paths forward
1. One new tank 6000 gallon. New/upgrade fuel dist. Systems
2. Existing 6000 gallon tank to remain at location 2.
3. Integration of fuel leak detection systems into SCADA system
4. Monitoring of switch gear rooms temperature and integration into SCADA system.
5. Mechanical P&ID for generator cooling/ventilation and leak detection systems.
MCC Assessment
There are several things to take into consideration with assessing the condition of the current MCC/switchgear on
site.Typically, the main factors that help determine the lifespan of the equipment and the need for replacement areas
follows:
• Age of the equipment.
• How has this equipment been maintained?
• What is the health of the equipment?
• Are spare parts readily available?
• Is this equipment serviceable by the maintenance staff?
• Does the design still fit for future use, and for how long?
• Costs/timeline/feasibility associated with maintenance/upgrade.
Assess the conditions of the existing MCCs through a dialogue with facilities personnel for problems with the
equipment in the past or any ongoing maintenance problems. There are 24 MCCs and 257 buckets in the facility. We
need to see all of the MCC internal buckets and look for potential problems, wear and tear, etc. Pictures will be taken
and be used for evaluation.A qualified electrician or a facilities personnel with the proper PPE will be required to open
the enclosures. To exclude MCC being replaced in task 5.
A report of the findings with our recommendations will be provided.
Some of these MCCs have very high fault currents and/or incident energy(arc flash), so outages might be required.
Worst case are immediately downstream of utility transformers to allow for top-level equipment to be accessible one
at a time, and likely on different days.Windows for outages might be very short too.
