a
•
1 (b) Excessive water pressure. Where local water
pressure is in excess of sixty-five (65) pounds per
2 square inch, an approved type pressure regulator
preceded by an adequate strainer shall be installed
3 and the pressure reduced to sixty-five (65) pounds
per square inch or less . Each such regulator and
4 trainer shall be accessibly located and shall have
the strainer readily accessible for cleaning without
5 removing the regulator or strainer body or disconnect-
ing the supply piping. All pipe size determinations
6 shall be based on eighty (80) per cent of the reduced
pressure.
7
All equipment for heating and storage of hot water for
8 domestic or commercial purposes, when installed,
repaired, replaced, relocated or re-connected, shall
9 be equipped with acceptable emergency protective devices
to prevent excessive pressure and excessive temperature
10 as hereinafter described. These emergency devices
shall be of the following classifications:
11
A combined temperature and pressure relief valve.
12
A separate pressure and a separate temperature
13 relief valve.
14 A temperature relief valve shall have the capacity to
prevent water in the heater from exceeding 210° maximum
15 temperature. It shall be tested and rated by an
approved and qualified testing laboratory and certified
16 to comply fully with the provisions of the American
Standards Association ASA Z21 .22 - 1958.
17
A pressure relief valve shall have a relieving capacity
18 capable of preventing a pressure rise in excess of 10%
of the set pressure. It shall be set to start opening
19 at a pressure not exceeding the rated working pressure
of the tank or heater. It shall be tested by an
20 approved and qualified testing laboratory and certified
to comply fully with the provisions of the American
21 Standards Association Standard ASA Z21.22 - 1958 and
when required shall comply also with the ASME Low
22 Pressure Heating Boiler Code for hot water supply boiler.
23 Combined temperature and pressure relief valves shall
comply with the requirements as outlined above for
24 both temperature relief valves and pressure relief
valves .
25
Temperature Relief Valves shall be installed either
26 directly in the tank providing a tapping is available,
not more than six (6) inches down from the top of the
27 tank, or in the hot water outlet pipe. The valve shall
be of such design and so installed that the end of
28 the temperature sensing element shall be immersed in
the hottest water within the upper six (6) inches of
29 the tank.
30 Pressure Relief Valves may be installed in either the
hot or cold line as indicated by local conditions . When
31 an ASME pressure-only relief valve is required, it shall
be installed in compliance with the requirements of
32 the ASME Code.
